Taste of Rally – Rally Navigation Class with
Willem Avenant Rally Racing

Rally Navigation Intro Course
September 13-15, 2024
Hisega Adventure Lodge
Black Hills, South Dakota

Our Goal:

Our goal for this class was to bring quality rally navigation instruction to the fingertips of North Americans looking to expand their riding skills to include Rally Navigation.  Additionally, riders will gain the skills to compete or participate in Rally Raid-style events. Whether or not you have immediate plans to participate in a rally or just want to learn, honing navigation skills is a natural progression in riding.

About the Course:

Navigation presents a distinctive challenge for even the seasoned riders among us. Thus, this course will include challenges that incorporate roadbook/rally-style navigation, and the course is friendly to mid-sized ADV bikes**.  Additionally, this curriculum is designed for riders wanting to learn & experience the fundamentals of rally racing. The emphasis will be on mastering BASIC navigation and roadbook skills. Doing this provides a solid foundation in understanding roadbooks and navigation techniques. Best of all, you can use your mid-sized adventure bike or dirt bike with minimal equipment requirements.

Hardware required:

We will be using digital roadbooks for this training. This way your phone or a tablet (running an android OS) with adequate mounting hardware will work for this course.  Alternatively, Willem can get you set up to purchase The Rally Tab. This lets you experience the difference between a basic tablet to a tablet meant for Rally.  This course is an affordable way to learn roadbook navigation and experience a rally-style event.

Arrival: Friday (optional)
Friday is an optional arrival day/meet and greet. We will have a reception grill out at 6:30pm where you'll get a chance to mingle with other guests, get a brief what to expect from Willem and of course eat some food. This is optional but highly recommended.  If renting a Rally Tab you'll need to be here to get set up.

Day 1: Saturday
Today is a training day with a few hours of "classroom" time spent learning to read a roadbook and all the symbols that go with it.  After our few hours of learning we'll head out with a few shorter route options to hone your newly acquired skills. Lunch is on your own but I'll have a few options for you along the way if needed.
3
Day 2: Sunday
Let's ride!  Today will be set up like a mini Rally.  You'll get your roadbook and head out on the trail to practice what you have learned.  We'll have some challenges and meeting points along the way to discuss questions you might have but for the most part today is a day to prove to yourself you can read a roadbook with confidence. After returning to the Lodge you can head out or stay a night.
